Chess stars begin arriving in Bengaluru for Season 4 OF GCL

Magnus Carlsen, Javokhir Sindarov and other top players have started arriving in Bengaluru ahead of the fourth edition of the Global Chess League. The countdown to the Global Chess League 2026 is almost over, and Bengaluru is beginning to welcome some of the biggest names from the world of chess. With the fourth season of the franchise-based competition set to get underway on September 5, players from across the globe have started arriving in the city for the highly anticipated event. Among the biggest names to have reached Bengaluru is former world champion Magnus Carlsen. The Norwegian returns to the Global Chess League after missing the 2025 edition and will represent the defending champions, Alpine APL Pipers. Carlsen will lead a formidable lineup that also includes Indian stars Vidit Gujrathi, Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh, along with Anish Giri and reigning World Rapid champion Volodar Murzin. The arrival of the Norwegian superstar is expected to generate significant excitement among chess fans in Bengaluru. World Championship challenger Javokhir Sindarov has also arrived in the city ahead of the tournament. The Uzbek prodigy will headline the FYERS American Gambits and enters the competition just months before his much-anticipated World Championship clash against India's D Gukesh. Sindarov's presence adds another fascinating storyline to the tournament, especially with the youngster set to test himself against several of the world's strongest players in a unique team format. Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand is another major attraction this season. The five-time world champion will represent the PBG Alaskan Knights for the first time after spending the previous three editions with the Ganges Grandmasters. Anand will be joined by India's top-ranked player Arjun Erigaisi and teenage Turkish sensation Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, giving the Bengaluru crowd an opportunity to watch players from multiple generations compete alongside each other. The star-studded field also features the likes of Alireza Firouzja, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Levon Aronian and Daniil Dubov, ensuring that Bengaluru will host one of the strongest chess fields seen in India. As more players arrive and the six franchises complete their preparations, the focus will soon shift from the airport arrivals to the chessboard. For the next nine days, Bengaluru will become the centre of the chess world as legends, established superstars and emerging prodigies battle for the Global Chess League title.
