The fourth season of the Global Chess League got underway in Bengaluru on Friday, September 5, with four fascinating matches setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting tournament.
It was FYERS American Gambits who emerged as the biggest winners of the opening day, registering victories in both their matches to finish Day 1 at the top. Meanwhile, Ganges Grandmasters and defending champions Alpine APL Pipers also began their campaigns with important wins.
The opening match saw FYERS American Gambits defeat PBG Alaskan Knights by a convincing 10-4 margin. The biggest talking point came on the Icon board, where World Championship challenger Javokhir Sindarov defeated Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand.
Sindarov's victory gave the American Gambits a significant early advantage and set the tone for a dominant performance. Marc'Andria Maurizzi also contributed with a crucial win as the Gambits secured a comfortable victory.
In the second match of the day, Ganges Grandmasters edged past two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings 10-9 in a closely fought contest. The narrow result proved just how little separates the six teams in the unique franchise-based competition.
The defending champions Alpine APL Pipers then began their title defence against CheQ Mumba Masters. With World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen returning to the team, the Pipers entered the contest as one of the favourites.
However, the Mumba Masters gave them a serious fight. M Pranesh defeated Anish Giri, while Harika Dronavalli overcame Divya Deshmukh. Carlsen was unable to beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on the Icon board, with their game ending in a draw.
Despite the setbacks, the Pipers found enough crucial points elsewhere to secure a hard-fought 10-8 victory. Vidit Gujrathi played an important role in the win, while the match went down to the wire.
The final match of Day 1 saw FYERS American Gambits return to the board against Triveni Continental Kings. Having already lost their first match, the Kings needed a strong response but instead suffered another defeat.
The American Gambits completed a perfect opening day with a commanding 14-5 victory, making them the only team to win both their matches.
After the opening day's action, FYERS American Gambits had established themselves as the early team to beat. However, with the tournament following a double round-robin format, there is still a long way to go in Bengaluru.
Day 1 also provided exactly what the Global Chess League is designed to offer: legendary players, emerging stars and unpredictable team battles sharing the same stage. And if the opening day is any indication, the competition for the Season 4 title is only getting started.
